In Self-Management: Theory and Application, students will
- Determine personal and academic goals for the semester.
- Learn about the academic organization of the College: the six schools and the majors in each school.
- Report on two majors of possible interest.
- Learn about Marist’s Core/Liberal Studies Program: its content, its value, and the rationale for the Core.
- Meet individually with the instructor to discuss possible majors and the student’s progress in his/her courses.
- Learn how to register for classes.
- Attend and report on a campus-wide Career Expo.
- Clarify values and long-term goals, which lead to reflection on a major that would support this.
- Interview a professor in a discipline of interest, then report and present the results to the class. The presentation will be videotaped.
- Be invited to a FOCUS welcome dinner in September, a luncheon at the end of the semester, and a farewell FOCUS luncheon at the end of the academic year. At these events, students will have an opportunity to meet with their academic advisors as well as FOCUS students from previous years.
Career Planning & Decision-Making offers student the opportunity to
- Identify career values, interests, skills and personality style and related these traits to specific careers and academic majors.
- Obtain information on career fields of interest to find out the nature of the work, employment possibilities, future job outlook, necessary academic major, entry level positions, salaries, etc.
- Talk to a Marist alumnus who is working in a career field of interest.
- Have an individual consultation with their instructor.
- Attend the annual Majors Fair.
In addition, FOCUS students will have the opportunity to talk with FOCUS students from previous classes at an annual FOCUS luncheon, and attend several activities in the residence hall organized by the FOCUS mentor.
