Self-Management: Theory and Application is a three-credit course that can be used in partial fulfillment of the Social/Behavioral Science Core requirement. It can also be used as a psychology elective.
Within the framework of psychological theory, research, and practice, the course teaches students a practical self-management model that enables them to succeed academically and personally while in college and in their later careers. Topics common to many introductory psychology courses are presented through the self-management model that integrates the affective, behavioral, and cognitive aspects of human functioning. The model is applied to such areas as motivation, procrastination, assertiveness, self-esteem, time management and study skills. Through an understanding and application of the principles taught, the student will acquire a foundation for becoming a self-directed, self-motivated learner, academically, personally, and professionally. In addition, there will be activities for the FOCUS students designed to increase their knowledge of majors and resources available to them on the Marist campus.
Career Planning and Decision-Making is a one-credit course that prepares FOCUS students for major and career decisions. The course facilitates self and career exploration by assessing values, interests, abilities and personality, and then matching those traits to various majors and career options. Gathering information to aid in decision making is also an important feature of this course as is setting short and long-term goals. Students utilize print and web resources to learn about majors and careers. An interview with a Marist alumnus from a career field of interest is an option in the course. |
