Nave

This is the NAVE where the congregation would stand
+ was lit by 32 silver hanging candelabra

Now, looking upward see the wooden beams that go all the way across the nave?
That's typical of both pagan Roman + Christian basilica

Just below the beams are a row of windows called the
CLERESTORY which literally means the "clear storey"
a storey of the bldg pierced by windows

Pagan Roman basilicas also had a clerestory
But the Romans didn't invent this method of lighting al
large hall. They borrowed this from the Egyptians

(here we looked at the model of the Hypostyle Hall
of the Temple of Amon at Karnak as an example of
         Egyptian use of clerestory windows)
