Lynne L. Doty

Lynne L. Doty completed her Ph.D. at Stevens Institute of Technology with a specialization in graph theory, the area of mathematics that analyzes and designs reliable communication networks. She has published the results of her research in professional journals devoted to both pure and applied mathematics. Currently she is engaged in an interdisciplinary project, analyzing the mathematics of poetic forms.

While teaching a variety of major and non-major courses, she has collaborated with English department colleagues in a sustained investigation of effective ways to link the teaching of mathematics and writing. Some of her ideas on teaching mathematics to non-majors have appeared in a journal devoted to the improvement of undergraduate mathematics instruction. Her most recent venture attempts to bridge the gap between humanities and mathematics by integrating the teaching of mathematics with writing projects designed to help students understand mathematics as a human endeavor that is part of a larger cultural and historical context.

In her otherwise free time, Professor Doty trains boxer dogs for competition in American Kennel Club obedience trials. Her first three dogs earned several titles. Numbers four and five are preparing to carry on the tradition.
