Lights Out: Solving a Puzzle as a Paradigm for "Doing Mathematics"

Abstract:

Lights Out is a popular puzzle that is manufactured by Tiger Electronics. In this talk, I will not only solve the puzzle using some surprising mathematics, but I will also illustrate the process that mathematicians use to find and attack new problems.

Prof. Lotto was invited to speak by the Marist College Math Club. His talk will be accessible to students.
