Links to Knot Theory
Knots are of interest to a wide variety of people: from mathematicians and physicists to biologists and artists. I will introduce the mathematical concept of a knot and the historical background of the study of knots. We will focus on two key developments in knot theory - the Reidemeister moves and polynomial knot invariants. We will discuss how these developments can be used to decide if two knots are equivalent.
This talk will conclude with an overview of recent work involving knots; including genetics and my research in virtual knot theory.
