Mapping the Cornea: The Theory and Practice of Mathematically Describing the Cornea

Abstract:

Ophthalmologists would like to have an accurate mapping of the corneal surface for use in reshaping the cornea in surgery. Reflective corneal topography is the study of this reconstruction of the corneal surface by reflecting a known pattern off of the corneal surface, recording the distorted pattern, and numerically reconstructing the anterior corneal surface by using information from both the original and distorted grid pattern. We will examine some of the differential geometry and numerics behind this procedure.

Audience:

The talk will be given in such a way that anybody who has had vector calculus will understand most of it. In fact, any student who has had differential calculus should be able to understand the big picture.
