Title:

Using an Historical Perspective from "Against the Gods" to Motivate the Study of Mathematical Analyses in Managerial Decision-Making

Abstract:

Managers in all organizations face complex decisions, from launching new products to raising debt and equity capital to insuring against catastrophic loss. The manager makes such decisions when there is uncertainty as to the outcome. Fortunately, quantitative methods provide ways to approach and/or solve these problems. Seminar participants will be provided with a few examples of the history and use of analytical techniques as applied to business problems (from "Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk" by Peter L. Bernstein). They will be asked for suggestions, experiences and additional insights into motivating learning mathematical techniques to be applied to business problems.

Audience:

This talk will be appropriate for educators and students interested in exploring ways to use the history and evolution of quantitative methods to motivate their use in managerial decisions.
