A New Approach to Normal Surface Theory
In a one-vertex triangulation of a three-manifold the only normal 2-sphere is the vertex link. We can view any normal surface by looking at its projection onto the normal 2-sphere. An interesting example is created by a layered triangulation of a solid torus to get a one-vertex triangulation of any lens space.
