Title:

May I Take Your Order? An Introduction to Mathematical Orderings: Posets and Lattices

Abstract:

The concept of "order" is very important in mathematics and has led to the development over the last century of the very deep and beautiful theory of ordered algebraic structures.  This theory not only has connections to other branches of mathematics such as logic and topology but has also been successfully applied to problems in theoretical computer science and other fields.

This talk is intended to give an elementary introduction to mathematical orderings; specifically partially ordered sets and lattices. It will consist of basic definitions with many examples and pictures. No prior knowledge of the subject is assumed and most of the talk should be accessible to a general audience.
