What Is a Ring?
The notion of an algebraic structure called a "ring" will be presented, first by focusing on what a ring is not, and then through illuminating examples. Some methods for constructing new rings out of old ones will be given. I will also expound a bit on why anyone would want to study these objects. This talk will be readily accessible to any intermediate level undergraduate mathematics student.
