Title:

Persi Diaconis Flips a Coin in Montreal, and Other Lectures from the CMS Winter 2004 Meeting

Abstract:

The speaker had the pleasure of attending the 2004 Winter Meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society in Montreal. There were many very entertaining lectures where the mathematical results had real world implications. In this talk we will report on what we learned in Montreal about such questions as the following... Is flipping a coin a fair way to settle a dispute? Is it safe to use your credit card number over the Internet? How long can the earth's population continue to increase?
