FROM CANVAS TO COMPUTER: DIGITAL ART IS GROWING TREND
By Tristan Baker

Paint and canvas are things of the past.

These two tools, used by artists for centuries, are being replaced by their 21st century equivalents.

A keyboard and mouse.

Digital art, the process of creating or manipulating art with the use of computers, is possibly the fastest growing trend in the art world.

“Digital fine art is an emerging movement in the art world and it is perhaps the most powerful, complex, and diverse art forms yet devised,” said the Digital Arts Group on their website.

Today’s computer technology makes it possible for anyone, not just artists, to create and manipulate pictures with ease. A skilled artist can produce works that resemble the masterpieces created by Leonardo Da Vinci and Pablo Picasso, without ever touching a paintbrush.

Digital art is becoming recognized as a mainstream art form with the help of organizations like the Digital Arts Group and the New York Digital Salon.

On their website, the Digital Arts Group describes themselves as, “a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the advancement of digital fine art and the artists that create it.”

They provide online galleries for the viewing of digital art, and display articles written by digital artists. They also established a network to help digital artists communicate and collaborate more freely with each other.

2003 marks the tenth anniversary of the New York Digital Salon, a virtual art gallery designed to promote artists who primarily use digital media for their work.

Renee Schacht, assistant director of the New York Digital Salon, said, “Working with new media curators from around the world, the New York Digital Salon seeks to develop an unbiased, universal world position regarding the history of new media art.”

The New York Digital Salon also provides an online gallery of digital artists. In addition, they are hosting an exhibition titled “Vectors: Digital Art of Our Time” in the World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery from the 22 of April to the 25 of May. The exhibition will highlight many prominent digital artists.
