Note: The American Heritage Dictionary, a paperback, must be brought to class at every meeting. It may be purchased at the college bookstore.
Required Lectures
Formal classroom lectures will not be repetitious of the required readings. Their function will be to supplement the texts and present new information. Therefore you should take careful classroom lecture notes and study them for tests or exams. Required reading material will be reviewed in formal discussion sessions.
Course Objectives
The aims of this course are to examine the social, economic, and political developments and events that shape Russian history from the reign of Alexander the II to the October Revolution. The study is designed to help students understand the Russian people and the historical events that shaped their national and political character, as well as the historical destiny, in which they find themselves today.
Other Requirements
A term paper that pertains to the content and historical period covered by the course, i.e. 1801-1917. This project will be due two weeks before the last class of the semester. The term paper topic should be selected by the last class in February. Make an appointment with the instructor to discuss the term paper topic before the end of February.
NOTE: THE TERM PAPER MUST CONSIST OF A MINIMUM OF TEN PAGES.
Basis of Final Grade:
a) Mid-Term exam- 30%
b) Final Exam- 30%
c) Semester Term Paper- 30%
d) Participation in Discussion Sessions- 10%

B. Using Internet and World Wide Web
A list of Internet sites and WWW sites will be handed out in class to help you locate archives, reference material, and bibliographical data pertaining to authors and works covered in this course. Please make use of them the way you have previously in searching facts in the "traditional" library. Even the college library can be accessed this way, through "Marist Country"; this is accessible to you through the college or your own home computers.
