Course Objectives

Essentially, this course is the study of literature as an art form.Specifically, it is the study of the psychological novel as a genre. The course is devoted to the examination and analysis of the works of FEODOR MICHAILOVICH DOSTOEVSKY, Russia's most profound psychological -religious writer.To quote the famous Russian philosopher Nicholas Berdyaev:So great is the worth of Dostoevsky that to have produced him is by sufficient justification for the existence of the Russian people in the world; and he will bear witness for his countrymen at the last judgement of the nations.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  1. TERM PAPER:

    On any theme or topic analysing Dostoevsky's works or life, aspects which are not to be covered in the instructor's lectures;choice of topic to be submitted by February 15,1997 due two weeks before the last class; project worth 25% of final grade;

  2. PARTICIPATION IN CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS:

    Every third or fourth meeting will be set aside for in-depth analysis of assigned readings; all class members are expected to take part in these discussions; 25% of the final grade are based on individual's participation;

  3. TESTS AND FINAL EXAMINATION:

    Two tests and a final examination will be given; the dates will be announced; the tests and the final examination are worth 25% each of the final course grade;
