Course Objectives:

To introduce American students to the world of Leo Tolstoy, one of the giants of
Russian Literature as well as a world figure. The study will include a nurturing
approach to Tolstoy's writing. We will examine his literary masterpieces, both long
and short works, through the introspective of aesthetic, ethical, religious and social
considerations. In particular (to the latter) we will focus on his philosophy on nonresistance
to violence, conscientious objection, pacifism, and his progressive educational
theories. However, his literary art and craft will be the main objective of this course.

Course Requirements:

1. To read all of the required texts
2. To participate in analysis of the works to be discussed in class
3. Required papers, essays, etc. to be handed in on time
4. To take announced exams, tests and unannounced quizzes
