Academic and Scientific Dishonesty

Definitions

Full definitions of cheating and plagiarism are stated in the student handbook as part of the student code of conduct. These definitions include:

Submitting written material without proper acknowledgement of the source.
Submitting data that has been altered or contrived in a way that is deliberately misleading.
Copying someone else’s test or examination paper.
Using unauthorized material or equipment during a test, such as crib notes.
Working with others on a take home examination or assignment when the instructor has required independent and unaided action

Specific Examples of Dishonesty in General Chemistry:

Looking at someone else’s paper during a test or exam without the instructor’s permission.

Talking or communicating information during a test or exam without instructor’s permission.

Using textbook, calculators, study notes, crib notes or any other material during a test or exam without instructor’s permission.

Submitting identical text, graphs, diagrams or calculations as someone else without instructor’s permission even if work was performed as part of a group. (Note: it is permissible to discuss work with others but assignments must be written independently. Just because you collect data with someone does not mean you may hand in the same text, graphs, or calculations).

Submitting an assignment or report using material from a book, paper, web page or any other publication without clearly citing the source.

Using someone else’s data without instructors permission and without clearly citing where the data originated. Refer to the document "Writing about science" for the proper citation format.

Making up or altering data to get better results or to obtain the expected correct values.

Submitting a lab report without having performed the experiment without instructor’s permission.

Allowing someone to copy or cheat from you. This included providing people with data to copy without your instructor’s permission, allowing someone to look at your work during a test or examination, allowing someone to use your report in order to prepare their own.

Consequences

It should be noted that all faculty at Marist College are required to notify the dean of their school of all instances of dishonesty.

Consequences of dishonesty are at the discretion of the instructor but typically include an F grade for the assignment or test under question and the issuing of a formal warning for the first instance of dishonesty.

An F grade for the course for subsequent instances of dishonesty. Instructors may also suggest suspension or expulsion from the college. Students accused of dishonesty may contest the accusation by following the appeals process outlined in the student handbook.
